MLO 1: Language Proficiency
Students are able to communicate effectively in Spanish in three modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational, and in a culturally appropriate manner in a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances at the Advanced Low level of language proficiency, according to ACTFL Guidelines.
In the Core requirements, SLHC majors complete two required language classes (Spanish 301 plus one other from SPAN 302; SPAN 303; SPAN305; SPAN 313; SPAN 315, SPAN 345). In addition, students’ performance and proficiency in the target language is developed through their enrollment and active participation in those courses in the program that are taught in Spanish.
Note: Final Language Proficiency is demonstrated via the STAMP Proficiency Exam in WLC 400: WLC Major Capstone

MLO 1 Reflective Narrative
As part of this MLO, all students will be able to communicate with people, provide interpretation, and present to an audience in the language of Spanish. Students will also be able to communicate in culturally appropriate ways and explore the large variety of Hispanic culture through language. In order for me to complete MLO 1, I was able to participate in two courses. These courses are SPAN 425 and SPAN 301. In Spanish 425: Literatura Mexicana, students were able to interact and share ideas with classmates and faculty members on various works of Mexican literature from its indigenous and Hispanic origins to its more contemporary expressions. During this course, I was able to communicate with people around me and share ideas from various novels while speaking in my native language. This course helped me enforce my social skill and I got the opportunity at the end of the semester to present a PowerPoint focused on the work of the author Reyna Grande. This presentation helped me fulfill this MLO by communicating and presenting professionally in Spanish with my classmates. The second course that added to my completion of MLO1 was SPAN 301: Composicion Oral. In this course, I was able to strengthen my academic writing by completing several assignments that were in need of correction for academic use. As part of this class, students were given examples of different situations and were able to put into practice their interpersonal skills by communicating with classmates. These activities helped me fulfill the MLO by putting in practice my interpersonal skills with classmates and people around me. In the end, both courses along with faculty members and classmates, helped me strengthen my three different types of communication: interpersonal, interpretative, and presentational, and have provided me with tools to collaborate within a variety of social and professional settings and circumstances. I will continue to practice these skills along in my academic and personal journey in order to gain more knowledge and proficiency.
